AURONS:
Perched at the end of the Goule, halfway between Salon and Pelissanne, Castrum de Auronis, now known as Aurons, has kept its Provençal character and well deserves its title of “Perle du Val de Cuech” (Pearl of the Cuech Valley).

CHARLEVAL:

Located 25 km from Salon-de-Provence, this is a recent village, founded in 1740 by Cesar de Cadenet. He decided to build a village to ensure that his lands would flourish. Large and small streets lead from the castle situated on the edge of the Adam de Craponne canal. The layout of perpendicular and parallel roads shows that Charleval was built in peacetime (not following the typical circular design of Provençal villages) and is an interesting feature of Charleval.

CORNILLON-CONFOUX:

Cornillon-Confoux, a delightful little village of Celto-Ligurian origin and built on a rocky spur 118 metres high, protects its remarkable character. From the end of the Neolithic age to the beginning of our era, a succession of pastoral and agricultural tribes settled here. The last Celto-Ligurians, dominated by the Greeks of Massalia, called on the Romans for help. After numerous invasions the Cornillon lands became the property of the counts of Provence and were then attached to the archbishopric of Arles. The arrival of the monks from Montmajour (11th C) brought a bout of prosperity; a church and chapels were built and agriculture developed, especially after the draining of the surrounding marshlands.

EYGUIERES:

The gateway to the Alpilles, Eyguières is situated east of its massif. It has the distinguishing feature of possessing the highest point, the Tour des Opies, at its altitude of 498 m. From the summit can be seen a brilliant panoramic view, to the south the glistening white pebbles of the Crau Plain, to the north the maternal Durance nourishing and colouring our olive trees, cypresses and almond trees, from the east wafts the fragrance of the Luberon lavender and to the west, the lords of Les Baux de Provence with the shining star watching over the romantic harmony of the Alpilles.

GRANS:

A succession of particularly outstanding neo-classical façades from the 17th century adds to the charm of this very picturesque and harmonious Provençal village on the Touloubre. Grans, nestled in its green setting, is the perfect picture of a little Provençal village. The benches under the plane trees eavesdrop on old stories, the houses of sun-bleached stone stretch lazily along the narrow streets, the Touloubre flows quietly by under the serene gaze of the fishermen. Between the Alpilles and the sea, Grans is a stage along the holiday route. With 4,000 inhabitants, Grans has met the challenge of preserving the village's strong identity, while still offering a large range of activities and amenities. Respect for tradition and heritage goes hand in hand with innovation and the well-being of its population.

LA FARE LES OLIVIERS:

At the top of the village you will find the Castellas, the ruins of the castrum of La Fare, from which the village originated. Long ago in the Middle Ages, from its perch on the lone rock in the Eguilles chain, this castle kept watch over the Arc valley and warned against invasions by barbarians, conquerors, Ligurians and other undesirables. Visit the Pavillon de Forbin which has stood on the plain since 1670. It is surrounded by very fine landscaped grounds. Despite a few alterations, the pavilion has preserved most of the features of 17th-century architecture in Provence.

LANCON DE PROVENCE:

Saint Cyr chapel. This chapel is a true jewel of Romanesque art, probably dating from the end of the 11th century, situated on the edge of the RN 113 road. It was the centre of the original village. The castle overlooking the village was built by the Princes of Les Baux in the 12th century. The church, whose oldest part dates from the 14th century, houses magnificent paintings of the 18th-century Marseille school. The remains of the Templars' House, a private mansion, commonly called “The Templars' House” and dating from the 16th century, is listed as a Historical Monument.

MALLEMORT:

This is a pretty village on a rocky mound containing the ruins of the bishops of Marseille's castle and its square keep, as well as a panoramic viewpoint indicator, a fine 17th-century house, a chapel which was used for processions in the past, and two shrines. The church of Saint-Michel, from the same period, rebuilt in the 18th century and restored in the 19th, has pinnacles, a corner spire and a fine pyramidal bell tower with a defensive turret. Mallemort is situated on the rich agricultural land of the Durance Valley, on a slight relief (159 m) of the Costes hill from where the splendid panoramic view of the Luberon, the Alpilles and the villages of the Durance can be enjoyed.

ROGNAC:

Inhabited for over 5,000 years, this area was first occupied by Neolithic hunting groups. Roman domination from the end of the 2nd century BC was followed, at the end of the 1st century BC, by the creation of several estates from one of which, Rudinacum, the name Rognac probably comes. The decline of the early Middle Ages did not spare the village but it was never completely abandoned. In the year 1000 the area was improved with the construction of a seigniorial castle and a hilltop village at the foot of the Castellas.

SAINT-CHAMAS:

This village owes its name to Sanctus Amantius (Saint Amans), bishop of Rodez. In the 7th century a chapel surrounded by fortifications was built on the hill, and so the town was born. The village, separated into two parts by the Baou hill, is exceptionally interesting to tourists and enthusiasts of scientific curiosities. Made from blue zaffer and muschelkalk, it comprises two main districts, the Pertuis and the Delà. Few Provençal villages can boast such an original geographic and topographic location.

VERNEGUES:

The history of Vernègues starts on the Grand Puech plateau which overlooks a large area of Provence. From its summit at 394 metres, well-preserved cave dwellings indicate human occupation dating back to the Neolithic era (5,000 to 2,000 BC). In the Iron Age (800 to 500 BC), a Celto-Ligurian community settled on the eastern part of the plateau, as testified by a few remains including the ruins of ramparts. In the evening of 11 June 1909, an earthquake with a magnitude of 6 on the Richter scale devastated the villages in the area and destroyed almost all of the old seigniorial castle and the old village below it. To this day, the ruins scattered over the southern side of the plateau attest to the violence of the earthquake. Today, Vernègues is a peaceful village, a paradise for ramblers and a sanctuary for those who appreciate the calm and beauty of nature in all the different seasons.
